[dropcap size=big]I[/dropcap]f Frederick Herzberg was still alive and saw this image, he might say that people in the tomato fight are being motivated more by the nature of their work than the conditions of the work. He proposed that there are two kinds of motivators: ones that are better at keeping people in the job or stopping people from quitting their job, and others that work better to encourage and create longer-term satisfaction and motivation.

If management wishes to increase satisfaction on the job, it should be concerned with the nature of the work itself — the opportunities it presents for gaining status, assuming responsibility, and for achieving self-realization. Wikipedia

We found a great TED talk where Daniel Pink shares with us that traditional rewards are not as effective as we like to think. He says that once even the slightest rudimentary cognitive skills are needed, a larger reward led to poorer performance. Watch the video.

In another video, at about the 5:30 min mark, Daniel Pink explains how if you want real engagement from your employees, don’t give them bonuses. Instead, give them the freedom to do some self-directed work – as part of their work. He says that people will work longer, better, and harder because they want the challenge, or because they want to master a skill. Watch the video.

We found another video that shows that hygiene factors are the things that need to be present to ensure some level of success, and motivational factors contribute a lot to workplace satisfaction.

  • Hygiene factors – Benefits, Pay, Job Security, Friends in Workplace
  • Motivational Factors – Recognition, Achievement, Advancement, Challenging Work

At the 8:30 min mark you will see a complete whiteboard drawing showing hygiene factors fit into the bottom three Maslow needs (social, security, and physiological needs) and motivational factors fit into the top two (esteem need and self-actualization).
